Forfeit

老闆打理自己生意困身，打工仔何嘗不是﹖每年大大小小活動數十個，重要活動的日子不得放假，事前又有漫長的準備工夫。有假沒空放，又不得累積假期，只好眼白白喪失（forfeit）寶貴的年假。

Forfeit一字源自拉丁文，for-來自拉丁文foris，指「outside、beyond」；-feit來自拉丁文facere，指「do」。合起來，即是「go beyond（what is right）、do too much」。Forfeit解「（因違規而）喪失、被沒收（財產、權利或特權）」。例如，I've accrued more than 30 days of annual leave and my company's policy forfeits any annual leave greater than 30 days at the end of the year.（我已累積超過30天年假，而根據公司政策，在年底我會喪失超過30天的年假。）

由於forfeit指「喪失某權利」，所以常用forfeit the right to something/to do something。例句：Citizens who commit a serious crime will forfeit the right to vote.（公民犯了嚴重罪行，將喪失投票權。）One cannot forfeit the right to life due to one's wrongdoing.（一個人不能因為犯罪作惡而喪失生存的權利。）
