Latest

A同事問B同事︰「這份新文件latest甚麼時間遞交？」B同事說︰「當然是新措施生效當日。」其實A同事是想知道「最遲的遞交日期」，而不是「最早的遞交日期」。

Latest一字有兩個常用但意思很不一樣的含意。Latest一方面可以指「最新的、最近的、最先進的」（newest、most recent、modern）。例如，Have you checked out the latest summer collection of this brand？（你有沒有看過這個品牌的最新夏季系列？）I really enjoy his latest book on veganism.（我真的很喜歡他最近關於素食主義的書。）This programme will help you master the latest technology in the industry.（這課程將幫助你掌握行業的最新技術。）

另一方面，latest可以指「最遲的、最晚的」，用來強調必須在規定的時間或日期之前發生或完成某些事情。例句︰I have to get this done by 7 o'clock at the very latest.（我最遲必須在七點鐘前完成這項工作。）
