Condemn

多次警民衝突及元朗發生白衣人追打途人事件後，行政長官林鄭都只有用言詞譴責（condemn）暴力事件。譴責暴力行為固然是必須，但是市民期望政府作出實際行動去根治民憤。

動詞condemn語氣強烈，解「譴責」，即是非常強烈地表示你不贊成某事或某人，特別是因為你認為這在道德上是錯誤的（morally wrong）。常用to condemn someone for something/doing something點出因甚麼事譴責甚麼人。例句︰The government condemned protestors who stormed the Liaison Office building.（政府譴責襲擊中聯辦的抗議者。）We must condemn the white-clad mob for brutally attacking protestors and passengers at the MTR station.（我們必須譴責白衣暴徒在港鐵站殘酷襲擊抗議者和乘客。）

Condemn還可以解「使……遭受、使……處於」不幸的境地，帶貶義。例如，Poor education condemns them to live with fewer opportunities and lower income.（缺乏教育致使他們得到較少機會和較低收入。）Continued sickness condemned her to a life of taking medicines and going through surgeries.（持續生病迫使她過着食藥和做手術的生活。）
