Excessive packaging

眾所周知，月餅的成本其實很便宜，貴在過度（excessive）包裝、過度宣傳。不過，我每年還是會買一兩個月餅，跟小朋友慶中秋，保留這個傳統。

形容詞excessive解「過度的、過多的」，即是too much。例句︰Mooncake manufacturers should reduce excessive packaging.（月餅製造商應減少過度包裝。）You don't need so many leather jackets in your wardrobe. It's excessive.（你的衣櫃裏不需要那麼多皮外套，這太多了。）

Excessive不要字尾-ive，變成excess，也可以用作形容詞，但意思跟excessive不一樣。Excess解「多餘的、額外的」，即是extra。Excessive可形容抽象的事情；excess則常用於形容物料，多餘的部分可以丟掉。例如，The police used excessive violence against protesters.（警察對示威者使用過度武力。）Cut off the excess fat from the meat before seasoning and cooking.（在調味和烹煮之前，切掉肉的多餘脂肪。）

此外，excess可以用作名詞，指「過分、過量、過度」。常用in excess of解more than。例句︰The company spent in excess of half a million on a consultation report that was never considered.（該公司在一份從未考慮過的諮詢報告上花費了超過50萬元。）
