Restraint

前政務司司長陳方安生、英國政府均呼籲各方克制（restraint），和平地解決理大事件。不過，就算理大事件解決了，只要港府還沒有「政治問題，政治解決」，下一宗理大事件亦會出現，社會動盪依然會持續。

名詞restraint可以解「克制」，尤其是指在難以保持冷靜的情況下，仍要保持冷靜、作出理性受控的行為--calm, sensible, controlled behaviour。Restraint的意思抽象，是不可數名詞（uncountable noun）。

Restraint常配搭動詞show（表現）、exercise（行使）、lack（缺乏）。例句︰The government called for both the police and protestors to exercise restraint and find a peaceful resolution.（政府呼籲警察和示威者保持克制，並尋求和平解決方案。）There is more and more evidence suggesting that the police lack restraint when they interact with protestors.（愈來愈多證據顯示，警察在與示威者互動時缺乏克制。）

當restraint一字作「限制」解時，則常用複數restraints。例如，The university was limited by financial restraints to conduct further research in this area.（那大學受到財政限制，無法在該領域作進一步研究。）
