Bankruptcy

剛過去的5月，破產管理署一共收到多達2,079宗破產呈請（bankruptcy petition），相等於去年全年總數的44%。這場疫情給許多人造成財務壓力，而且我們不確定今年冬天疫情會否重來。

名詞bankruptcy指「破產」這種財務狀況，用於描述公司或個人均可。例如，Many companies and individuals are facing bankruptcy.（許多公司和個人都面臨破產。）The airline's bankruptcy stemmed from the COVID-19 pandemic and was considered unavoidable.（該航空公司的破產源於新冠肺炎疫情，被認為是無可避免的。）

Bankruptcy一字亦可以引伸指某重要的素質「徹底消失」，而這些素質是抽象的，不像金錢財產般具體。常用moral bankruptcy（道德淪亡）和intellectual bankruptcy（知識破產）。Intellectual bankruptcy即是不再真誠地參與辯論問題，而是依靠撒謊、歪曲。例如，The moral and intellectual bankruptcy of the mass media will directly affect the next generation.（大眾傳媒的道德和知識破產將直接影響下一代。）

不要字尾-cy，可以將名詞bankruptcy變成形容詞bankrupt。例句︰Many big and small businesses are going bankrupt.（許多大大小小的企業都快要破產了。）The Weinstein case shows how morally bankrupt Hollywood is.（溫斯坦案展示出荷里活有多道德淪亡。）
