Aftermath

黎巴嫩首都大爆炸帶來嚴重後果（aftermath），導致過百人死亡，數千人受傷，更可能令25萬人無家可歸。黎巴嫩本已四面楚歌--新冠肺炎疫情、經濟危機、政壇腐敗、社會矛盾……大爆炸實在是雪上加霜。

Aftermath一字有兩個意思，都與after（之後）有關。Aftermath可以解「後果」或者「結束後的一個時期」，只用於發生極度破壞性事件之後。黎巴嫩大爆炸就是一個適合用aftermath一字的例子。

例句︰Lebanon is still assessing the aftermath of the massive Beirut explosions.（黎巴嫩仍在評估貝魯特大規模爆炸的後果。）The aftermath of a civil war is unimaginable to us.（內戰的後果是我們無法想像的。）

常用句式in the aftermath of...，表達「在……結束後的一段時間裏」。例如，Hundreds have been missing in the aftermath of the Beirut blast.（貝魯特爆炸後有數百人失蹤。）Several countries have pledged aid in the aftermath of the blast.（爆炸發生後，幾個國家已經保證提供援助。）
