Extend

新冠肺炎疫情反覆，專家亦預警第四波疫情將會在短時間內爆發。限聚令等社交距離措施需要再度延長（extend），有望減慢疫情的發展。

Extend一字源自拉丁文，由ex-（out）和tendere（stretch）組成，即時stretch out。雖然extend一字有多個意思，又可以用於多個情境，但是也有「伸展」的意思。

文首提到的extend解「延長、延期」，to make something last longer。例如，You have to extend your visa.（你必須延長簽證。）

The supermarket has no plan to extend its opening hours.（這超市沒有計劃延長營業時間。）

Extend也可以指「擴大」，用於形容地方、計劃等。例句︰The school plans to improve and extend its campus next year.（學校計劃明年改善和擴建校園。）

The Board of Directors has agreed to extend the policy to all members of staff.（董事會已經同意將政策擴展至所有員工。）

Extend還可以指「影響到、適用於」。例如，This restaurant restriction does not extend to guide dogs for the blind.（此餐廳的限制不適用於導盲犬。）
