Depreciate

隨着學位普及，手上一紙證書自然不如舊時矜貴。同是手持學士證書，到了35至39歲時，70年代出生的平均每月收入45,900元，80後則只有41,100元。可見，學歷真的貶值（depreciate）了。

從depreciate的字首de-，可以知道它與「減」有關。動詞depreciate解「貶值、跌價」，尤指價值隨時間下跌。例如，I never buy new cars; they depreciate by half as soon as they are on the road.（我從不買新車，因為它們一落地便會貶值一半。）Our house has depreciated by 10% over the last five years.（在過去的5年中，我們的屋子貶值了10%。）

Depreciate的反義詞是appreciate（增值、漲價）。例如，If the stock has appreciated in value, you may avoid paying capital.（如果股票的價值已升，可以避免支付資本。）Our flat has appreciated by one-third in less than three years.（我們的樓房在不到3年的時間內升值了三分之一。）

此外，appreciate常解「欣賞、理解、體會到」。例句︰I appreciate your help on this.（感謝你在這方面的幫忙。）I can appreciate it is not an easy task.（我能夠理解這不是容易的事。）
