Inappropriate

有學校竟然向小一學生播放南京大屠殺的戰爭片段，包括嬰幼兒屍橫遍野、日軍處決中國百姓的真實場面。此類暴力血腥畫面明顯地不適合（unsuitable）小學生觀看，老師的做法並不恰當（inappropriate）。

語文極少有絕對同義詞（absolute synonyms），以減輕記憶的負荷，英文也不例外。形容詞appropriate和suitable在某些特定語境下可以交換使用，但通常是不可以的。

Appropriate和suitable都可以繙譯為「合適的」，但從字面和字源可見，appropriate強調的是proper（正確的、體面的）；而suitable強調的是否suit（適宜）。考慮用appropriate還是suitable更合適時，可以看看該語境是否適合用proper。另外，suitable比appropriate更強調功能（functionality）。

例如，It is not appropriate to wear sandals to the graduation ceremony.（畢業典禮穿着涼鞋並不恰當。）I didn't feel it was an appropriate time to talk about money.（我不覺得當時是談論金錢的合適時間。）This movie is not suitable for children.（這部電影不適合兒童觀看。）This watch is suitable for diving.（這款手錶適合潛水。）
