In sight

全球新增新冠個案數字大幅減少，死亡人數亦按周跌22%，是自2020年3月疫情爆發以來的最低水平，世衞表示疫情有望結束︰The end of the pandemic is now in sight。

名詞sight本意解「視力」，例如，good/poor sight（好/差視力）、a sight test（視力測試）、to lose your sight（失去你的視力）。

Sight可以引伸指「視野之內可見之物、景象、情況」，常配搭不同介詞（prepositions）。文首提到的in sight，字面指「已經在視野範圍內」，即是事情「即將到來、很快就會發生」。例句︰We have come so far in the battle with COVID-19 and the end is at last in sight.（我們與新冠疫情搏鬥多時至此，疫情結束終於在望。）There is still no end in sight.（仍然看不到盡頭。）

相反，如果說out of sight，可依字面解「超出視綫範圍」，或者引伸指「超出能力範圍的」。例如，Don't let your children out of your sight at the swimming pool.（在游泳池時，不要讓孩子離開你的視綫範圍。）The cost of this machine is totally out of sight.（這台機器的價格完全超出了我們的能力範圍。）
